BEGUILER

Descend an infinite dungeon while discovering spells, runes, enemies, and tactics!

How deep can you go?

Beguiler is a tactical roguelike with a unique spell system:

  • Move to gain spell runes
  • Kill all the monsters to unlock the exit
  • Descend deeper to grow stronger
    • HP is either healed, or max HP is increased
    • New rune slot is added every odd numbered level
    • New runes will be discovered and assigned to movement every even level
    • New spells are discovered as you collect more runes

Beware as the dungeon grows stronger as well...

I hope you have fun, and I sincerely thank you for playing 💖

Development Details

This game was all by myself in 7 days for the 7DRL 2024 challenge!

  • I programmed everything in vanilla JS
  • I made all the sfx with jsfxr
  • I made the music with beepbox

I spent 2 months about an hour a day building a game engine from scratch for the jam. I purposefully only made "generic" roguelike concepts prior to the jam - all the "game" work was done exclusively during the 7 day period.I technically started my jam early morning Monday, but have submitted it midday Sunday.

I purposefully picked and explored a mechanic that I don't believe violates any of the tenants of a "pure" roguelike.

I am especially interested in feedback good or bad about the movement based spell system specifically, but of course I would love any feedback about anything at all 💖

Making games is my passion, thank for your time reading this, and most of all thank you for playing my life's work 🙇‍♂️

- Chris

p.s I wanted to mention that my hero and mentor also worked on a project for 7drl - if you like super fun games that make you happy, please check out his entry here!
